Year 7 English Excursion to ACMI

On the 2nd of April, Year 7 students went to the Australian Centre of Moving Images to explore Australian history and storytelling with a seminal film and expert talk. This term, we have been studying ‘The Rabbits’ by Shaun Tan and John Marsden. We have also been studying Indigenous issues in ‘Behind the News’. Both of these multimodal texts touch on the colonisation of Australia and the effects it has had on Indigenous Australians.

Students watched ‘Rabbit-Proof Fence’ which focuses on the journey of three Aboriginal girls after they are forcibly removed from their home. There were many tears shared and after watching this film, students found out more about its historical context and explored the narrative techniques used to tell this story.

Students then had lunch at Federation Park before exploring the ACMI Screen Worlds Exhibition. It was a great experience for the students who thoroughly enjoyed the excursion.
